In the early 1970s, China’s top drugmaker Pfizer was trying to “get us some” with its “VIAGRA”-branded Viagra, which it had acquired in China for about $7 billion. Pfizer had been selling the little blue pill for several years and the country’s drug industry was already looking for ways to boost revenue. It had also been trying to get a domestic demand firm to develop the drug. The drugmaker wanted the market to shift toward China.

China’s drugmaker had previously been known for a bit of a boom in Viagra, and the Chinese market had also been a mainstay of Pfizer’s business strategy of making drugs to treat a variety of medical conditions. Now it had a way to grow.

China’s first big drugmaker had bought Pfizer’s Chinese drugmaker to try to boost the company’s Chinese sales of Viagra. It was a deal worth fighting. Pfizer had paid out about $6 billion to settle outstanding drug-related lawsuits in China. In the deal, Pfizer agreed to sell the drug in the country of five Chinese companies. It also agreed to pay a $4 billion fine for failing to make a profit in the first place. The company was in the process of setting up a new company in China, but the Chinese government had yet to approve the drug.

China’s Viagra was still not on the company’s radar for a lot of reasons. In the early 1970s, it also was not in the company’s radar for growth. China’s Viagra was a much bigger problem than Pfizer’s. Pfizer had already done some research on the drug, but its results seemed to suggest that Viagra might not be as effective as Pfizer’s version. The drugmaker was not getting much help from the Chinese drugmaker. It had already gotten a bit more help from the United States, but it was not going to get off the ground. Pfizer had been in the business of trying to get domestic sales in China. It had also been paying for the sales of a Chinese company. It was not looking for foreign help. It was just getting in the way of what Pfizer wanted to do. Pfizer had an idea.

China’s Viagra was going to be hard to find. It was not going to be easy for Pfizer to get a domestic drugmaker to help it. It was not going to be easy. Pfizer had the ability to get its own domestic drugmaker to help China. China’s Viagra had been a very difficult thing to get on the market. Pfizer was trying to make it easier to grow.
